2018 MILLE MIGLIA STORICA

When one thinks of the golden era of racing, one of the road races that first come to mind to any Motorsport fan has to be the Mille Miglia. This event was for decades the most anticipated dates of the racing season and were pivotal in the development of many Grand Tourers that we cherish today. For Enzo Ferrari and his newly established independent “Scuderia” the MM brought a lot of satisfaction with 8 wins in 11 entries from 1947 to 1957.  proved to be The race had to come to a stop when safety concerns for the drivers and the millions of spectators that lined the roads became too big. Fortunately, motoring enthusiasts are today given the opportunity to carry on the racing legacy through an unmissable tribute event.

The Mille Miglia Storica

The 2018 edition of the Mille Miglia Storica (the 35th of its kind) will take place from the 16th to the 19th of May. As usual, the event will start and finish in Brescia’s Piazza della Vittoria with its turning point in Rome. Only owners of classic cars built before 1957 (last edition of a competitive MM) will be able to take part in this prestigious regularity race. The drivers must adhere to many strict regulations and the winners will have flawlessly passed the many time trials, time controls and average trials with minimal penalties. The classic cars will motor along breathtaking scenic roads that have shaped the history of world motor racing, paying homage to the feats of fearless drivers such as Clemente Biondetti, Gigi Villoresi, the Count Marzotto, Piero Taruffi and the list goes on…

This year, the first day of racing will take participants from Brescia to the vibrant Adriatic town of Milano Marittima. On the second day, the race will cross the boot to reach the Italian capital, where the cars will gloriously parade the city center of the Eternal City. On the third and fourth legs, the participants will head back north stopping in Parma and complete the 1,000 miles race in Brescia.

The Mille Miglia is without a doubt the most anticipated classic road-racing event of the year. Enthusiasts from all over the world bring their cars to Brescia for four days of unforgettable actions and no one forgets to pack their competitive side! “A California-based Ferrari dealer makes a big Italian connection.

The Mattioli Automotive Group is going back to its Italian roots with the purchase of the world-famous Bacchelli & Villa restoration shop in Bastiglia, near Maranello, Italy. Mattioli is known for amazing Ferrari dealerships in Beverly HillsLos AngelesSouth Bay and Silicon Valley in California. The company is now positioned to restore Ferraris in the birthplace of Ferraris. Franco Bacchelli, who founded Bacchelli & Villa with his now-deceased cousin Roberto Villa in 1972, said Mattioli is committed to local craftsmen and their tradition of excellence. “People are magic, and here they have a unique gift,” Bacchelli said.

“That is the love they put in everything they do.” You can always train a new worker to be good, but it’s far better to train someone who knows and lives the local passion for work well done, Bacchelli said. “This is why, in this shop, the job interview is in the local dialect,” Bacchelli said. “And we ask whether the tortellini are hand made at home.” Bacchelli started working on top-notch Italian sports cars in 1958. “I turned 14 and, with my dad, took the bus to go to Modena to look for a job for me,” Bacchelli said. “The first place we entered — it was the closest to the bus stop — was Piero Drogo’s shop. I remained, and learned my work until 1972, when, after military service, I decided to open my shop.” Eventually, Bacchelli & Villa teamed up with Ferrari to repair and build cars, including the Ferrari 512 BB Le Mans cars. In 1995, Bacchelli & Villa entered the restoration business. Soon, cars that needed a new life started flowing into the shop.

Ferrari collectors such as Jacques Swaters and Charles Pozzi were the first to send their cars to the shop for restoration. Col. Ronnie O’Hare, Luigi Chinetti and Paul Pappalardo also sent cars. Bacchelli & Villa have restored 49 Ferrari 275 GTB cars, and they hope to soon start bringing the 50th back to life.
A connection with Mattioli Automotive Group’s Ferrari dealerships in California — the largest Ferrari market in the world — ensures that business in Bastiglia will be brisk. “Now, with the new organization offered with MAG,we can imagine an even better and more successful future, and I’m absolutely thrilled for my workers,” Bacchelli said. “Many of the second generation is working here, and I’ve been able offer them a safe future with Giacomo Mattioli and the Mattioli Automotive Group.” In return, American Ferrari owners will get topnotch restorations from technicians who grew up building and repairing Ferrari cars, said Marco Arrighi, who is the new director at Bacchelli & Villa.

Arrighi is taking over the shop after almost 39 years at Ferrari, and he plans to maintain and expand the already high level of craftsmanship. “The project was too beautiful and interesting to say no,” he said. “We use the same materials of the past, the same tools, and sometimes, the hands of the son of the man who did the car back in period.” American restorers are considered some of the best in the world, so how does an old-school shop near Modena, Italy, attract business from the United States and around the world?

“When I first started working here, one of the first things Franco Bacchelli shared with me was the deep emotion he felt when Paul Russell, one of the most capable and renowned American restoration shops, visited this shop and congratulated him for the quality of the work,” Arrighi said. “We know the cars from when they were new and how they were made.” Still, quality standards have increased over the decades, and Bacchelli & Villa has improved with the times.
“If we repaint a car as was done in 1960, with the same lack of attention to detail, we would be out of business in a very short time,” Arrighi said.“The cars we restore are absolutely original, in every single detail, but they have a finish quality that is definitely better than original.” The shop’s goal is to work closely with the California-based Ferrari dealerships — and offer fantastic restorations to world-class cars and demanding customers. “We’d love to have a 250 GTO in the restoration shop, as so far we have done only one, a 1964 car,” Arrighi said. “And we’d like to have some SWBs — the most
beautiful car ever.” Arrighi has a personal connection with lots of Ferrari cars, but he’s eager to see one model in particular enter the shop. “I have a special relationship with the 288 GTO because I was the one in charge of the preparation and the start of its production line,” Arrighi said.”

A SUCCESSFUL RETROMOBILE WEEK

It was an honor being represented at Salon Retromobile in Paris, the most relevant classic car expo in the world, with Ferrari Classiche, while showing the only surviving street alloy “Daytona” in its legendary “barn find” conditions as well as the 1966 Ferrari 275 GTB4 in Argento and Pelle Nera, masterfully restored by our own craftsmen at Bacchelli & Villa restoration shop. Both cars were true crowd-pleasers and attracted many enthusiasts throughout the week.

JOIN US A RETROMOBILE, PARIS

With some exciting events already in the books and many more coming up, we can say that 2018 is set to be another exciting year for us classic car lovers.

Our next occasion is set for the extravagant Salon Retromobile, in Paris from February 7 to 11, 2018. Considered one of the most relevant classic car expos in the world, Retromobile will take stage at the Porte de Versailles Exhibition Centre and guarantees to be a premier rendez-vous for the most prominent car collectors. We invite you to attend this famed event in Paris, and we will be glad to welcome you inside our hospitality area located in the main Pavilion (Hall 1, booth No. R015).

Last week-end Collezione by MAG and Bacchelli & Villa had the privilege to attend the prestigious 27th Palm Beach Cavallino Classic, where we showcased our gorgeous 1962 Ferrari 250 GT Cabriolet Series II by Pininfarina and our newly-added restoration facility made its American debut.  It sure was a pleasure to see so many familiar faces there and participate in the success of the first major concourse of the year.

Last but not least, it is important to comment on the January Scottsdale auctions, as their results and performances set the tone for the coming months. Overall, sales totaled $247.8M with a minor decline (-5%) over last year’s results. However, fewer lots crossed the block (-8%) and sell-through rates were up to 84%. Blue-chip Ferraris with fascinating provenance continue to bring strong results. A clear example is this year’s highest sale: Battista Pininfarina’s personal1965 275 GTB Speciale sold by Gooding & Co for over $8M.

On Saturday January 27th, the newest addition to Mattioli Automotive Group, Bacchelli & Villa, together with Collezione BY MAG joined forces at Cavallino Classic for a full week of car talk and world-class collectibles.

Held at the famed Breakers Hotel in Palm Beach, FL, Cavallino Classics is one of the premier Concours d’Elegance in the United States and the year opener appointment for the most discerning cars collectors. 

More than 140 Ferraris attended the Concorso d’Eleganza on the lawn at the Breakers Hotel – including our Collezione By MAG 1962 Ferrari 250 GT Cabriolet Series II by Pininfarina – for the prestigious Platinum Award and collected honors in 10+ dedicated Ferrari classes.

Mr. Franco Bacchelli was in attendance to represent Bacchelli & Villa in the United States, together with Director Marco Arrighi and Collezione By MAG General Manager, James Del Pozzo. In particular. Mr. Bacchelli was excited to share many projects and unique memories that made history in the sports and racing cars restoration world.

The 250 GTO ANNIVERSARY RALLY

An historic rally was organized by Ferrari Events for the 55th anniversary of the 250 GTO. This Ferrari is widely considered the most iconic car ever built—both in terms of its design and for the wins it collected around of the world’s most important races.

The participation level was incredible: 20 of the 36 cars ever produced, answered the call to meet in Tuscany. It is estimated, that at current value, the group of Ferraris is worth over one billion Dollars. The event set off from Florence, where on Monday the 250 GTOs had driven through some of the most beautiful parts of the city. During the rally customers enjoyed Italian gastronomic delights and, above all, competed on one of the most illustrious tracks in automotive history, the legendary Mugello street circuit, a route measuring more than 60 km and until the mid-1960s the scene of battles between champions of the calibre of Mario Casoni, Renzo Sinibaldi and Carlo Facetti.

After returning to Florence on Thursday, the crew headed to Maranello on Friday, retracing the route of the Mille Miglia and ending the rally at the factory where they lined up in the square in front of the presidential building. It was an extraordinary sight with so many original and certified cars in the different colors of the various national sports federations: from the red of Italy to the yellow of Belgium, the blue of France and to the green of Great Britain. In the evening, customers were guests at the Classiche department workshop for a very special gala dinner at which Ferrari announced the 2022 rally, which will celebrate the 60th anniversary of one of the greatest cars ever to leave the gates of Maranello.

2017 FERRARI CAVALCADE

Exclusive for one hundred Ferrari’s most loyal customers and collectors from around the world, the Ferrari Cavalcade is a unique opportunity to reunited them in Italy with Top Ferrari Management while travelling to the most unique places in Italy and sharing unforgettable experiences created ad-hoc for Ferrari.

In 2017, the sixth edition of Ferrari Cavalcade visited Apulia from June 21 to June 25 in a unique setting celebrating Ferrari 70th anniversary with “hub” in Borgo Egnazia, in the Savelletri countryside that straddles the Brindisi and Bari provinces. From there, all participants drove along scenic routes in their Ferraris, meandering through villages and cities of art. The program combined Mediterranean charm and sheer driving fun.

2017 saw also clients from over 30 Countries in attendance, a testament to the brand’s global appeal: all five Continents were represented, all sharing the same passion for Ferrari.

Among the Ferrari models that strolled along the most scenic routes of Apulia ranged from the current production cars such as GTC4Lusso, F12tdf, California and 488 Spider to special limited series, such as the F40, the F50 and the Enzo. LaFerrari Aperta, symbolizing Ferrari’s 70th anniversary, couldn’t miss the event either!

MILLE MIGLIA, TRIBUTO FERRARI

In 2017, a total of 114 Ferraris will tread the legendary roads of the Mille Miglia, one of the world’s most difficult and beautiful car races. Sixteen Maranello cars will start in the economy run, which recalls the historic Italian car marathon and only admits cars approved for the race up to 1957. However, any Prancing Horse customer can take part in this great event thanks to the Tribute to Mille Miglia, which also admits Ferraris built after 1957, when the last competitive Mille Miglia was held.

Ferrari Tribute from Desenzano. The first stage passed through Lombardy and the Veneto with a unique panoramic drive along the shore of Lake Garda between the towns of Desenzano del Garda and Sirmione. Entrants come from over 20 countries with models spanning a period of 52 years. The oldest car is a 275 GTS of 1965, but participants also included a LaFerrari Aperta, Maranello’s icon of the 70th anniversary of Ferrari history.

First stage. The cars bid farewell to the shores of Garda and head to Monzambano and Valeggio sul Mincio, home to the “Nodo d’Amore”, a special tortellino pasta that is only made in this romantic resort poised between the provinces of Mantua and Verona. The stage ended with an evening parade in the city of Padua in Prato della Valle, Europe’s largest square after Moscow’s Red Square.

Drive to MEF. The second day started at Ferrara, which with its spectacular Castello degli Estensi is the big addition to this year’s event, to head to San Marino, Gubbio, and Terni before arriving in Rome at dusk. The following day, Ferrari Tributo to Mille Miglia started its journey back from the capital to Brescia. After following the race route through the now famous towns of Radicofani, Monteriggioni and Montecatini Terme, nearly 100 Ferraris of the Tribute went to the Casa Enzo Ferrari Museum (MEF) in Modena for a parade, a special tribute to one of the company’s historic locations in this special celebratory 70th anniversary year.

Parade. On the final day all the cars departed from Parma on the road to Brescia where after 1600 kilometers, exactly 1000 miles, the event concluded among the crowds lining the route.

2017 FERRARI CAVALCADE CLASSICHE

Twenty Ferraris from over 20 countries have taken part in 2017 Ferrari Cavalcade Classiche, a special event devoted to the cars that have made the history of Ferrari and selected Classiche Clients. Taken place in Tuscany on May 5-7, Ferrari Cavalcade Classiche brought its customers from all over the world to famous places in Italy, promoting Italian excellence in art, history, and gastronomy together with local specialties.

From the beaches of Versilia, clients and their Classiche Cars set off each day in their vintage cars to discover art cities such as Pisa, Lucca and Modena, fishing villages like Lerici, towns packed with history such as Pietrasanta, hazardous mountain passes through the Apuan Alps and the Apennines, to finish in Maranello with a unique fashion show inside the factory. Every day clients were exposed to unique experiences, such as being part of the extraordinary Ferrari display outside the Cathedral of Pisa, the parade on the walls of Lucca or the stop at the birthplace of Enzo Ferrari in Modena.

The cars entered in the event include the most important models in the history of the Prancing Horse: specimens like the 340 Mille Miglia, the 250 SWB, the 250 Le Mans, the 250 Tour de France, the 500 TR, and the 860 Monza. It has been a” travelling exhibition” as never before seen, a unique opportunity to admire the 70 years of the Ferrari myth.
